Capita Group Payroll Manager wins prestigious award

Congratulations to John Lee, Group Payroll Manager, who was crowned ‘Payroll Manager of the Year’ at the recent prestigious 2009 PAY Magazine awards. He claimed the top prize at the awards on Tuesday 3 November, amongst stiff competition and was commended for his leadership qualities. The commented that "the strength of John’s leadership skills really shone through in his nomination which, combined with the scale of his job, was particularly impressive. He’s been involved in many large projects during his time at Capita and has consistently demonstrated his ability to improve processes and procedures."

John currently manages a team of 42 staff engaged in HR and payroll administration across four teams: payroll, payroll control, scanning and fulfilment and HR & query resolution. He also oversees functions performed by a team of 39 Capita staff based in Mumbai who carry out payroll and HR processing on behalf of the Capita Group.

John truly deserves this accolade. During his 16 year history with Capita, he has seen employee numbers rise from 700 to 36,000 as Capita has experienced phenomenal growth via numerous acquisitions/TUPE transfers. John has been instrumental in ensuring that the Payroll Service has consistently innovated to respond to this growth. His impressive track record includes:

  • Management of payroll transition for employees from around 280 different businesses through TUPE and acquisitions and harmonisation of pay arrangements
  • Transition of staff in Ireland, Eire, Jersey, Guernsey and India, working across different fiduciary and regulatory environments
  • Seamless transition of payroll functions to new SAP system in 2003
  • Project management of off shoring key payroll processes to Mumbai
  • Creation of HR/Payroll Administration centre for staff HR and Payroll queries
  • Implementation of successful salary sacrifice schemes including pensions, share ownership, child care voucher scheme and the Inland Revenue approved PC loan scheme
